An extensive upgrade of the ÆGIR100 ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle), is currently underway. This upgrade includes the addition of two extra thrusters, increasing the number of motors from six (6) to eight (8), significantly improving the ROV’s performance and versatility.

The added thrusters will provide greater vertical thrust, enhancing the ROV’s ability to ascend and descend with increased control and precision. This also leads to improved stability and more accurate maneuverability in challenging underwater environments.

As part of the upgrade, the ÆGIR100 will be fitted with a 360° sonar system, enabling it to operate effectively even in low-visibility conditions. This will make it much easier to detect and identify underwater objects or features.

The Ping360 sonar will allow the ROV operator to „see“ in even murkiest conditions.

Another key improvement is the upgrade of the tether connector from a 3-pin to an 8-pin configuration. This change allows for seamless integration with other ROVs, such as those operated by the University Centre of the Westfjords. The tether can now be interchanged between ROVs depending on the task at hand.

We operate with two types of tethers:

  • A 200-meter slim tether, ideal for transport, smaller boats, or projects with limited space.
  • A 300-meter, four-pair tether for more demanding operations.

Both tethers are neutrally buoyant, ensuring smooth handling and minimal drag underwater.

While upgrading during peak expedition season is far from ideal, this has been a long-anticipated project. The upgrade is expected to take approximately one to one and a half months. In the meantime, alternative resources will be utilized to maintain ongoing operations.

Once completed, ÆGIR100 will rank among the most capable ROVs of its size in Iceland.
