Skv. Þjóðminjalögum 1989 nr 88, 29 maí þá teljast að jafnaði minjar 100 ára eða eldri til fornleifa. Það á sama við um skipsflök og eða hlutar úr þeim. Þó er heimilt að friðlýsa yngri minjar.
Fornleifum má enginn, hvorki landeigandi, ábúandi né nokkur annar, spilla, granda né breyta, ekki heldur hylja þær, laga né aflaga né úr stað flytja nema leyfi fornleifanefndar komi til.
Friðlýsingar geta verið mismunandi og fer það eftir eðli minjanna og á hvers forræði friðlýsingin er.

All cultural heritage over 100 years old in the sea or around the shores of Iceland is the property of the Icelandic state, according to laws. 80/2012.
It is not allowed to dive into wreck sites protected around Iceland without permission from the Cultural Heritage Agency.

Phönix (strandaði og sökk 31.janúar 1881 út af Löngufjörum Snæfellsnesi).
Köfunarbann gildir á Phönix án leyfis Minjaverndar Ríkisins.
The wreck of the steamship Phönix which sank in 1881 is protected.
It´s not allowed to dive into/near/on it without permission from the Cultural Heritage Agency.
Friðlýst þann – Protected since: 23 desember 2010.
Pourquoi-Pas ? (+1936)
Pourquoi-Pas ? (fórst á Mýrunum 16. september 1936). – Köfunarbann hvílir á flakinu án heimildar Minjaverndar ríkisins.
The shipwreck site of the French research ship is protected. Relatives of the explorer and scientist Jean-Baptiste Charcot filed a protective act on the shipwreck.
No one is allowed to dive near, or in the site without written and filed permission.
Friðlýst – Protected since 16. september 2003.
